Assertiveness is a vital skill that enables you to be more successful in both your personal and professional life. Being assertive helps you to communicate more clearly, achieve what you need to, build positive, productive relationships and not be taken advantage of.
Assertiveness is not to be confused with aggression, and assertiveness training is as applicable to those who come across as aggressive as those who are passive or submissive in their communication.
Assertiveness comes more easily to some people than others, but anyone can learn practical assertiveness skills and techniques with the right training. And with some practice and self-belief these can become second nature.
Below you can watch a short film which demonstrates a couple of assertiveness skills: how to say no and how to use the broken record technique. It shows one of our assertiveness trainers, Snéha Khilay, taking someone through an exercise to practise these skills.
This is just a small snippet of what we cover in our Assert Yourself with Confidence course, which is full of tips and techniques for being more assertive. For example, by attending you’ll learn: the idea of wimp talk vs power talk, how to use the fogging technique for responding assertively to negative feedback, how to make assertive requests and how to deal with ‘difficult’ people. Importantly, the course also addresses issues of confidence and self-esteem, which are essential to communicating assertively.
So if you want to communicate more confidently and assertively, take a look and the film below and give us a call to discover more about our assertiveness courses.
